What to Expect

...During a Sunday Morning Service

Upon arrival you will be welcomed by a member of our congregation - a greeter - as you enter the church through the covered entranceway. We are pleased to let you know our church building is wheelchair-friendly. Our Sunday service takes place in the hall or “Sanctuary” to the left of the lobby. A greeter will be handing out bulletins as you enter the worship area. The bulletin includes the order of the service and announcements.

The Sanctuary is laid out in a manner which reflects our Christian heritage. You will see a stage, or “chancel” at the front of the Sanctuary with a podium or “pulpit” where our minister and other speakers address the congregation. Cushioned pews in stadium seating layout face the pulpit.

Once inside the main entrance you will find yourself in the lobby, or what is often referred to as the “Narthex”.  There is a Welcome Table at the front of the lobby with a guest book and information for newcomers.  If you wish, please sign our guest book; we would appreciate the opportunity to contact you by email, letter or phone to welcome you and answer any questions you may have.

Action Table with sign-up sheets for events and volunteer opportunities, copies of recent sermons, articles of interest and information about all the activities and events taking place at Mount Seymour United.

There is a Lending Library in the lobby.  Enjoy comfortable seating while you browse the collection, or feel free to use the sign out sheet to borrow a book.

Hearing Assistance

If you are concerned that you may have difficulty hearing the service please visit the Welcome Table to inquire about the use of a headset. Hearing aid users can activate the T-switch on their aids to link into the church sound system.

What Happens During the Service?

The Sunday Service is made up of several ‘sections’ which are described below. In addition to these sections, our Reverend Nancy Talbot delivers a relevant and engaging sermon. Occasionally Sunday Service will include a guest speaker or a special musical performance. Words and music are projected onto a screen so everyone can follow along, and there are hymn books in the pews if you wish to read the music.

Sunday Service begins at 10:00 a.m. with music, opening words, and announcements.

The lighting of the Christ candle on the communion table indicates the beginning of the service.

Music is an important aspect of Sunday Service with hymn singing, guest musicians and Mount Seymour United’s choir The Joyful Noise Once a month we hold a Gospel Service. This popular event features the Mount Seymour Community Gospel Choir.

Children are welcome during the first part of Sunday Service. Children may then leave the Sanctuary to take part in children’s programming. On the Sundays when we offer communion, children’s programming commences earlier (10:00 a.m.) so children may participate in our communion service.
The Offertory, accompanied by music, allows worshippers to financially support church programs and community service initiatives.

Most services include a reflection which is delivered by the minister or a special guest speaker.
Often the service will end with a hymn and closing words, or “Benediction”. The service usually lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Following the service you are most welcome to join us in the church lobby for community and conversation over coffee, tea and snacks.
